As pilgrims and wanderers on the earth who have searched for truth and light in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, we came face to face with ourselves and every precept and tradition we believed. We turned over every stone and searched in every crevice and fissure regarding the history and doctrines we supposed to be true. We were searching because we believed it to be true, yet the deeper we searched the more deceit and pretense we discovered which unraveled the precepts we espoused as truth. It all became the traditions of men. The decades-long dilemma of scrutinizing the framework and construction of the Mormon restoration collapsed before our eyes. The construct and paradigm we had confidence in since birth tumbled to the earth because its historical footings were set in sand and the ensuing storms and tides washed away the doctrinal moorings upon which Mormonism was founded.
As the full force of the storms ripped away the anchoring of the church’s assertions, we had to admit to ourselves that along with lacking all the other quintessential fruits of the Gospel of Christ, we were bereft of perhaps the most essential of the gifts of God. Following baptism, we each experienced the formality of hands being laid on our heads at eight years of age being told to “receive the Holy Ghost.” However, as most Mormons can tell you, nothing occurred when we received that ordinance; there was no physical manifestation whatsoever that the Holy Ghost had come or was received unlike the accounts in the scriptures… Nothing at all happened!
We lived as active Mormons believing we had actually received the Holy Ghost and we bought into that tradition as it was practiced. Everyone spoke of the Holy Ghost and the gift of the Holy Ghost in the most familiar and intimate of terms so there was no real question in any of our minds that we did indeed have that gift— or so we thought. As we continued to use the scriptures as our ultimate guide to the truth, they proved we never received the Holy Ghost. To complicate matters even more, once the historical problems of fraudulent revisionist priesthood claims were added back into the mix, the entire assertion for the right of the church to bestow the Holy Ghost in the first place went up in flames. God never authorized it, and no one had real authority to bestow that gift.
The Word of God unveiled details about the Holy Ghost we had never recognized because of the precepts of men which blinded us to the truth. Taken together with the many other deviations and eccentricities of the Strong Delusion, we were faced with the fact that we never actually received the Holy Ghost through a formal Mormon priesthood ordinance. Moreover, according to the scriptures, our understanding about the Holy Ghost was also incorrect and incomplete as it had been taught to us since childhood. Everything Mormons taught about the Holy Ghost was another case of cherry-picking a verse here and a verse there coupled with historical claims that were based on after-the-fact revisionist fabrications. As Mormons, we somehow talk the talk of “by their fruits ye shall know them,” and then collectively turn a blind eye to the facts in the case. We go on living ignorantly, pretending we have the Holy Ghost without the fruit of the Holy Ghost which is defined in scripture as a baptism of fire!
“The fruit” is not evident or present or manifest as the scriptures define it must be. Yet we tolerate this situation of endless pretending about the most sublime of spiritual gifts that a follower of Christ would desire. Any reasonable person who lives a life of faith and is honest with themselves would presume that if one actually had the gift of the Holy Ghost, then the same kinds of phenomenon would attend their daily lives as are portrayed in holy writ because God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Asleep Mormons have lost all ability to reason on this and many other issues because the Strong Delusion has left them handicapped in the deafening noise of the catch-phrases of membership. The oppression of Mormonism makes it nearly impossible for its adherents to recognize this predicament. But that is changing as more and more people are awakening to the truth!
Our only choice in this dilemma was to turn to the scriptures and learn for ourselves what the true prophets and apostles had to say about this most critical matter. So let’s begin our journey of learning this truth together. How is the Holy Ghost actually given?
11 And the Father said: Repent ye, repent ye, and be baptized in the name of my Beloved Son. 12 And also, the voice of the Son came unto me, saying: He that is baptized in my name, to him will the Father give the Holy Ghost, like unto me; wherefore, follow me, and do the things which ye have seen me do.13 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, I know that if ye shall follow the Son, with full purpose of heart, acting no hypocrisy and no deception before God, but with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the Father that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ, by baptism—yea, by following your Lord and your Savior down into the water, according to his word, behold, then shall ye receive the Holy Ghost; yea, then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost; and then can ye speak with the tongue of angels, and shout praises unto the Holy One of Israel.14 But, behold, my beloved brethren, thus came the voice of the Son unto me, saying: After ye have repented of your sins, and witnessed unto the Father that ye are willing to keep my commandments, by the baptism of water, and have received the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost, and can speak with a new tongue, yea, even with the tongue of angels, and after this should deny me, it would have been better for you that ye had not known me. (2 Nephi 31:11-14)
11 And it came to pass that Nephi went down into the water and was baptized. 12 And he came up out of the water and began to baptize. And he baptized all those whom Jesus had chosen. 13 And it came to pass when they were all baptized and had come up out of the water, the Holy Ghost did fall upon them, and they were filled with the Holy Ghost and with fire. 14 And behold, they were encircled about as if it were by fire; and it came down from heaven, and the multitude did witness it, and did bear record; and angels did come down out of heaven and did minister unto them. (3 Nephi 19:11-14)
19 And it came to pass that Jesus departed out of the midst of them, and went a little way off from them and bowed himself to the earth, and he said: 20 Father, I thank thee that thou hast given the Holy Ghost unto these whom I have chosen; and it is because of their belief in me that I have chosen them out of the world. 21 Father, I pray thee that thou wilt give the Holy Ghost unto all them that shall believe in their words. (Book of Mormon, 3 Nephi, 3 Nephi 19)
35 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that this is my doctrine, and I bear record of it from the Father; and whoso believeth in me believeth in the Father also; and unto him will the Father bear record of me, for he will visit him with fire and with the Holy Ghost.36 And thus will the Father bear record of me, and the Holy Ghost will bear record unto him of the Father and me; for the Father, and I, and the Holy Ghost are one. (3 Nephi 11:35-36)
1 And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words unto Nephi, and to those who had been called, (now the number of them who had been called, and received power and authority to baptize, was twelve) and behold, he stretched forth his hand unto the multitude, and cried unto them, saying: Blessed are ye if ye shall give heed unto the words of these twelve whom I have chosen from among you to minister unto you, and to be your servants; and unto them I have given power that they may baptize you with water; and after that ye are baptized with water, behold, I will baptize you with fire and with the Holy Ghost; therefore blessed are ye if ye shall believe in me and be baptized, after that ye have seen me and know that I am. (3 Nephi 12)
The verses quoted above make it ever so clear that the Father and the Son give the Holy Ghost to persons who have repented and have been baptized in the name of the Son with a valid baptism. In the verses below, Jesus gives power to his twelve Disciples or Apostles to “give” the Holy Ghost or in other words, to give access to the Holy Ghost because the verses above are strong evidence that the Holy Ghost comes ONLY from the Father and the Son. When hands are laid on persons by Jesus’ anointed Apostles (meaning they have real power and authority from God), then the Holy Ghost can be given and the Father sends it down from heaven to the appointed person. Nowhere in scripture do we find authority passed on to men besides the anointed Apostles to give the Holy Ghost!
The Mormon tradition of allowing every “Melchizedek priesthood” holder to give the Holy Ghost is completely unscriptural. The Mormon quorum of twelve apostles have no power and no authority whatsoever to do these things because it was never granted by God despite the claims to the contrary of the so-called restoration. In the opening statement to this essay, we brought attention to the fact that no physical phenomenon accompanied the Mormon ordinance, yet in the Book of Mormon as recorded in 3Nep 19:14 quoted above, the multitude of people witnessed the Holy Ghost and baptism of fire because it comes with power and is manifested to those present. The same thing occurred on the day of Pentecost in the book of Acts.
Now let’s see who has power to give the Holy Ghost. Remember, we read above that the actual gift of the Holy Ghost comes only from the Father and the Son. The Apostles of Jesus are agents to provide access to the Holy Ghost.
37 And the multitude heard not the words which he spake, therefore they did not bear record; but the disciples bare record that he gave them power to give the Holy Ghost. And I will show unto you hereafter that this record is true. (3 Nephi 18:37)
1 The words of Christ, which he spake unto his disciples, the twelve whom he had chosen, as he laid his hands upon them— 2 And he called them by name, saying: Ye shall call on the Father in my name, in mighty prayer; and after ye have done this ye shall have power that to him upon whom ye shall lay your hands, ye shall give the Holy Ghost; and in my name shall ye give it, for thus do mine apostles. (Moroni 2:1-2) (Notice it never says anything specifically to place hands on the persons head.)
14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: 15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. 20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. (Acts 8:14-20)
Simon thought he could purchase the right to have this power! This is incredible given the fact the Mormon church insists that its priesthood holders pay tithes for the right to pretend to bestow the Holy Ghost!! Persons seeking baptism must also pay tithing to receive the ordinance!!!
Receiving the Holy Ghost and Baptism of Fire
1 And it came to pass that the thirty and fourth year passed away, and also the thirty and fifth, and behold the disciples of Jesus had formed a church of Christ in all the lands round about. And as many as did come unto them, and did truly repent of their sins, were baptized in the name of Jesus; and they did also receive the Holy Ghost. (4Nep 1:1)
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (John 3:5) (Without the baptism of fire you’re not entering the kingdom of God! Most Mormon’s have no idea what this even means—)
10 And ye will also know that ye are a remnant of the seed of Jacob; therefore ye are numbered among the people of the first covenant; and if it so be that ye believe in Christ, and are baptized, first with water, then with fire and with the Holy Ghost, following the example of our Savior, according to that which he hath commanded us, it shall be well with you in the day of judgment. Amen. (Mormon 7:10)
20 And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost, even as the Lamanites, because of their faith in me at the time of their conversion, were baptized with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and they knew it not. (3 Nephi 9:20) (The Lamanites had a profound experience with fire and the Holy Ghost as recorded in Helaman chapter 5 but they didn’t understand or know what had happened to them.)
23 And it came to pass that Nephi and Lehi were encircled about as if by fire, even insomuch that they durst not lay their hands upon them for fear lest they should be burned. Nevertheless, Nephi and Lehi were not burned; and they were as standing in the midst of fire and were not burned. (Helaman 5:23)
43 And it came to pass that when they cast their eyes about, and saw that the cloud of darkness was dispersed from overshadowing them, behold, they saw that they were encircled about, yea every soul, by a pillar of fire. 44 And Nephi and Lehi were in the midst of them; yea, they were encircled about; yea, they were as if in the midst of a flaming fire, yet it did harm them not, neither did it take hold upon the walls of the prison; and they were filled with that joy which is unspeakable and full of glory. 45 And behold, the Holy Spirit of God did come down from heaven, and did enter into their hearts, and they were filled as if with fire, and they could speak forth marvelous words. (Helaman 5:43-45) (If Mormons have a valid ordinance to give and receive the Holy Ghost, we should be asking ourselves why we’re not having these profound experiences as a people?)
3 And it came to pass that after they had spoken these words the Spirit of the Lord came upon them, and they were filled with joy, having received a remission of their sins, and having peace of conscience, because of the exceeding faith which they had in Jesus Christ who should come, according to the words which king Benjamin had spoken unto them. (Mosiah 4:3)
10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: 12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. (Matthew 3:10-12)
32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. 33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. 34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. (John 1:32-34)
27 And I looked and beheld the Redeemer of the world, of whom my father had spoken; and I also beheld the prophet who should prepare the way before him. And the Lamb of God went forth and was baptized of him; and after he was baptized, I beheld the heavens open, and the Holy Ghost come down out of heaven and abide upon him in the form of a dove. 28 And I beheld that he went forth ministering unto the people, in power and great glory; and the multitudes were gathered together to hear him; and I beheld that they cast him out from among them. (1 Nephi 11:27-28)
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) (John 7:37-39)
The Holy Ghost Brings Power and Gifts of the Spirit
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. (Acts 2:1-6)
12 And also, the voice of the Son came unto me, saying: He that is baptized in my name, to him will the Father give the Holy Ghost, like unto me; wherefore, follow me, and do the things which ye have seen me do. 13 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, I know that if ye shall follow the Son, with full purpose of heart, acting no hypocrisy and no deception before God, but with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the Father that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ, by baptism—yea, by following your Lord and your Savior down into the water, according to his word, behold, then shall ye receive the Holy Ghost; yea, then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost; and then can ye speak with the tongue of angels, and shout praises unto the Holy One of Israel. (2Nep 31:12-13)
20 Now this is the commandment: Repent, all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me and be baptized in my name, that ye may be sanctified by the reception of the Holy Ghost, that ye may stand spotless before me at the last day.21 Verily, verily, I say unto you, this is my gospel; and ye know the things that ye must do in my church; for the works which ye have seen me do that shall ye also do; for that which ye have seen me do even that shall ye do; (3Nep 27:20-21)
21 And it came to pass that the thirty and first year did pass away, and there were but few who were converted unto the Lord; but as many as were converted did truly signify unto the people that they had been visited by the power and Spirit of God, which was in Jesus Christ, in whom they believed. 22 And as many as had devils cast out from them, and were healed of their sicknesses and their infirmities, did truly manifest unto the people that they had been wrought upon by the Spirit of God, and had been healed; and they did show forth signs also and did do some miracles among the people. (3Nep 7:21-22)
The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are One
The concept of the God-Head is so misconstrued by the Mormon Church which has wrested the scriptures and contorted them to fit with Joseph Smith’s so-called “First Vision.” We’ve addressed the nature of the God-Head as its described in scripture at the following posts: http://greatandmarvelouswork.com/the-true-nature-of-god/
The Holy Ghost is the Spirit of the Father (and the Mother) and it’s a gift of incomparable grandeur as They share a portion of Their Spirit with us when we qualify ourselves to receive the Holy Ghost. You can now see it can only be given by the Father and the Son because they literally give us a portion of their spirit that fills one with incomprehensible light and love and the gifts of the spirit. The God-Head is ONE God which manifests itself as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost as the scriptures make plain.
21 And now, behold, my beloved brethren, this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God. And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end. Amen. (2Nep 31:21)
44 Now, this restoration shall come to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, both the wicked and the righteous; and even there shall not so much as a hair of their heads be lost; but every thing shall be restored to its perfect frame, as it is now, or in the body, and shall be brought and be arraigned before the bar of Christ the Son, and God the Father, and the Holy Spirit, which is one Eternal God, to be judged according to their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil. (Alma 11:44)
27 And after this manner shall ye baptize in my name; for behold, verily I say unto you, that the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost are one; and I am in the Father, and the Father in me, and the Father and I are one. (3Nep 11:27)
36 And thus will the Father bear record of me, and the Holy Ghost will bear record unto him of the Father and me; for the Father, and I, and the Holy Ghost are one. (3Nep 11:36)
7 And he hath brought to pass the redemption of the world, whereby he that is found guiltless before him at the judgment day hath it given unto him to dwell in the presence of God in his kingdom, to sing ceaseless praises with the choirs above, unto the Father, and unto the Son, and unto the Holy Ghost, which are one God, in a state of happiness which hath no end. (Morm 7:7)
The Light of Christ
As we therefore DO NOT have the Holy Ghost, how is it that we are able to feel truth and make our way through life being led by God? One way is certainly through the gift of the Light of Christ which is given to all men.
18 And now, my brethren, seeing that ye know the light by which ye may judge, which light is the light of Christ, see that ye do not judge wrongfully; for with that same judgment which ye judge ye shall also be judged. 19 Wherefore, I beseech of you, brethren, that ye should search diligently in the light of Christ that ye may know good from evil; and if ye will lay hold upon every good thing, and condemn it not, ye certainly will be a child of Christ. (Moroni 7:18-19)
14 And thus we see the great call of diligence of men to labor in the vineyards of the Lord; and thus we see the great reason of sorrow, and also of rejoicing—sorrow because of death and destruction among men, and joy because of the light of Christ unto life. (Alma 28:14)
The Holy Ghost in The Isaiah Story
The premise of this blog has been to demonstrate that the scriptures tell a magnificent story of events coming upon the earth known as the “Isaiah Story” or “The Great and Marvelous Work.” Just as with Jesus’ advent in the meridian of time, when the Servant comes in the fullness of time, He will bring the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost back to the earth. Those who believe in Him and are baptized with water in His name will also be baptized with fire and the attendant gifts will follow as the scriptures teach.
14 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the power of the Lamb of God, that it descended upon the saints of the church of the Lamb, and upon the covenant people of the Lord, who were scattered upon all the face of the earth; and they were armed with righteousness and with the power of God in great glory. (1Nep 14:14)
27 And after that ye were blessed then fulfilleth the Father the covenant which he made with Abraham, saying: In thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed—unto the pouring out of the Holy Ghost through me upon the Gentiles, which blessing upon the Gentiles shall make them mighty above all, unto the scattering of my people, O house of Israel. (3Nep 20:27)
2 And behold, this is the thing which I will give unto you for a sign—for verily I say unto you that when these things which I declare unto you, and which I shall declare unto you hereafter of myself, and by the power of the Holy Ghost which shall be given unto you of the Father, shall be made known unto the Gentiles that they may know concerning this people who are a remnant of the house of Jacob, and concerning this my people who shall be scattered by them; (3Nep 21:2)
24 And then shall they assist my people that they may be gathered in, who are scattered upon all the face of the land, in unto the New Jerusalem. 25 And then shall the power of heaven come down among them; and I also will be in the midst. (3Nep 21:24-25)
For those who will NOT believe the Servant’s message, the prophet Mormon has already spoken on this matter:
14 And there were no gifts from the Lord, and the Holy Ghost did not come upon any, because of their wickedness and unbelief. (Mormon 1:14)
