Sanctified by the Holy Ghost; Led by the Holy Spirit

AndersOccasional Papers

While reading from Nephi’s tremendous dissertation in chapters 31 – 33 of Second Nephi, it’s apparent there is a further necessary discussion regarding the Holy Ghost we have not previously addressed. An earlier paper, related to this subject, discussed the mechanics or method and process whereby the Holy Ghost is given and received according to scripture. That paper overturns and topples the Mormon ordinance and associated precepts regarding the Holy Ghost and should be read in concert with this paper. Nephi’s great sermon touches on some additional elusive nuances that beg to be examined; therefore, let us investigate Nephi’s words and carefully consider and weigh the meaning of his inferences. The implication of meaning within these verses leads one to a conclusion regarding the place of the Holy Ghost in our lives (or lack thereof) and it overturns the presumptions of long held traditions. The conjecture and hypothesis of Mormons who suppose they have received the Holy Ghost is dashed to pieces by scripture which dismantles Mormon indoctrination. Thankfully we have the Holy Scriptures or “rod of iron” we can safely grasp amid the lies and corruption of religious dogma.

The fundamental and essential matter comes down to the concept of the “baptism of fire” which accompanies the reception of the Holy Ghost. According to scripture, this is a tangible and palpable and powerful sensation; a very real and truly marvelous experience when one is so endowed by the baptism of fire— an experience which is completely lacking in the Mormon ordinance of giving the Holy Ghost. Nephi gives us a KEY whereby we can know if we have indeed received the Holy Ghost. He tells us we are enabled to “speak with the tongue of angels, and shout praises unto the Holy One of Israel.” Please note the progression described in this passage by using the word “then.” Here are Nephi’s words:

13 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, I know that if ye shall follow the Son, with full purpose of heart, acting no hypocrisy and no deception before God, but with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the Father that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ, by baptism–yea, by following your Lord and your Savior down into the water, according to his word, behold, then shall ye receive the Holy Ghost; yea, then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost; and then can ye speak with the tongue of angels, and shout praises unto the Holy One of Israel. (2Nep 31)

Our small group of friends have known thousands of Mormons, yet we have never once heard a man or a woman speak with the tongue of angels as moved upon by the Holy Ghost or “baptism of fire” as Nephi described it. In other words, if Mormonism is true, then we should have experienced the same tremendous phenomena, marvels, and wonders associated with the Holy Ghost as are described in scripture. Yet never once have we witnessed these things. We discoursed upon these issues in our prior post about the Holy Ghost so this will suffice. Nephi later describes his own experience of speaking under the power of the Holy Ghost when he states, “And now I, Nephi, cannot write all the things which were taught among my people; neither am I mighty in writing, like unto speaking; for when a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it unto the hearts of the children of men. But behold, there are many that harden their hearts against the Holy Spirit, that it hath no place in them; wherefore, they cast many things away which are written and esteem them as things of naught.” (2Nep 33:1-2.)

Active Mormons might argue they have felt the Holy Ghost burn in their hearts when hearing a particularly good sermon. Nephi plainly said above that one would have to speak by the power of the Holy Ghost in order for their words to be carried into the hearts of men. In a Mormon setting, this would only be possible if the speaker was already endowed with the Holy Ghost. In order to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, one must first receive a valid baptism as stated above in scripture. We have proven elsewhere on this blog the fraud of Aaronic priesthood claims as well as the fraud of Melchizedek priesthood claims which necessarily invalidates the Mormon baptismal ordinance and the Mormon ordinance to bestow the Holy Ghost. Therefore, the Mormon people have not experienced the Holy Ghost at all.

If it’s not the Holy Ghost, what is it that people everywhere are experiencing when they feel that ineffable light of truth come into their souls?

The scriptures provide the construct and framework which teaches about three distinct instruments God uses to communicate with us. In ascending order as described by the prophets they are: 1- The Light of Christ. 2- The Holy Spirit. 3- The Holy Ghost. Let’s briefly define each sacred gift. We will provide some applicable verses for your consideration. As you search the scriptures diligently, you will gain a full understanding of these things. We are told in scripture that the Light of Christ is given to all mankind. That means it is a gift given to every soul that is born to aid them in their journey through life; therefore, whether a person is a soul of light or a soul of no light, they all receive the Light of Christ, placing everyone on equal footing. What each person chooses to do with that gift will determine the gifts to follow.

16 For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God. 17 But whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil; for after this manner doth the devil work, for he persuadeth no man to do good, no, not one; neither do his angels; neither do they who subject themselves unto him. 18 And now, my brethren, seeing that ye know the light by which ye may judge, which light is the light of Christ, see that ye do not judge wrongfully; for with that same judgment which ye judge ye shall also be judged. 19 Wherefore, I beseech of you, brethren, that ye should search diligently in the light of Christ that ye may know good from evil; and if ye will lay hold upon every good thing, and condemn it not, ye certainly will be a child of Christ. (Moroni 7:16-19)

Next, in ascending order, we come to the Holy Spirit. The writings of the prophets tell us the Holy Spirit is an additional endowment of light given to those who SEEK TO KNOW GOD AND FOLLOW HIM. To experience the Holy Spirit in our lives, we must have the desire to walk in the same footsteps of the righteous and holy ones who have gone before us. We must walk in the path known as THE WAY. Those who harden their hearts reject the Holy Spirit. Those who reject Jehovah when he stands up to perform The Great and Marvelous Work will harden their hearts and the Holy Spirit will have no place in them. When we discuss the Holy Ghost below we will have more to say about the Holy Spirit which is critical throughout our journey in the Light! Let’s read about how the prophets describe their experience with the Holy Spirit. Pay careful attention to their words.

16 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, being exceedingly young, nevertheless being large in stature, and also having great desires to know of the mysteries of God, wherefore, I did cry unto the Lord; and behold he did visit me, and did soften my heart that I did believe all the words which had been spoken by my father; wherefore, I did not rebel against him like unto my brothers. 17 And I spake unto Sam, making known unto him the things which the Lord had manifested unto me by his Holy Spirit. And it came to pass that he believed in my words. 18 But, behold, Laman and Lemuel would not hearken unto my words; and being grieved because of the hardness of their hearts I cried unto the Lord for them. (1Nep 2)

4 And there are many among us who have many revelations, for they are not all stiffnecked. And as many as are not stiffnecked and have faith, have communion with the Holy Spirit, which maketh manifest unto the children of men, according to their faith. (Jarom 1. Note that the Holy Spirit brings real revelation into our lives as we have communion with the Holy Spirit.)

19 For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father. (Mosiah 3. The Holy Spirit enables us to become true saints.)

46 Behold, I say unto you they are made known unto me by the Holy Spirit of God. Behold, I have fasted and prayed many days that I might know these things of myself. And now I do know of myself that they are true; for the Lord God hath made them manifest unto me by his Holy Spirit; and this is the spirit of revelation which is in me. (Alma 5)

28 But that ye would humble yourselves before the Lord, and call on his holy name, and watch and pray continually, that ye may not be tempted above that which ye can bear, and thus be led by the Holy Spirit, becoming humble, meek, submissive, patient, full of love and all long-suffering; 29 Having faith on the Lord; having a hope that ye shall receive eternal life; having the love of God always in your hearts, that ye may be lifted up at the last day and enter into his rest. (Alma 13)

Now we come to the Holy Ghost which is the third instrument or means whereby God communicates with his children who have advanced in THE WAY. Let’s pause here and make it very clear WHO and WHAT the Holy Ghost IS and IS NOT. Joseph Smith stated twice in his career that the Holy Ghost is a spirit personage waiting to take a physical mortal body. Wrong! As usual, his doctrinal ideas are incorrect and inconsistent with scripture. The scriptures themselves tell us again and again that the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are ONE GOD, therefore, the Son and the Holy Ghost are aspects of the Father as we have explained in several prior posts. The Holy Ghost then is nothing less than a portion of the spirit of the Father and Mother that is given to us by Them as a greater endowment of light and truth. The baptism of fire which accompanies the receipt of the Holy Ghost manifests itself in the life of the person in dramatic and significant ways. We discussed these things in our prior post on the Holy Ghost.

Some of the prophets, who wrote about the Holy Ghost, also spoke of the Holy Spirit in the same breath because the Holy Spirit continues to influence and lead and guide one in THE WAY even after receiving the Holy Ghost which appears to have certain specific functions we will note below. We wouldn’t presume to know exactly how these two sacred instruments work in tandem, but the prophets tell us it is so… and we believe their report. As you carefully read through the verses below, you’ll notice subtle nuances regarding this precious gem of truth. Let’s begin again with Nephi’s profound statement and search the scripture regarding the Holy Ghost. Only then can we appreciate its purpose in our lives because we anxiously await the Holy Ghost:

(2Nep 31. Speaking with the tongue of angels is speaking as angels speak. They prophesy. They speak truth about the scriptures. They clearly define in simple terms what the scriptures mean. Angels reveal truth. And if we are to speak with the tongue of angels, we must do the same. Thus, truth is carried to the hearts of listeners. See also Acts 4:8-13 to read of Peter speaking by the power of the Holy Ghost.)

24 Behold, my son, this thing ought not to be; for repentance is unto them that are under condemnation and under the curse of a broken law. 25 And the first fruits of repentance is baptism; and baptism cometh by faith unto the fulfilling the commandments; and the fulfilling the commandments bringeth remission of sins; 26 And the remission of sins bringeth meekness, and lowliness of heart; and because of meekness and lowliness of heart cometh the visitation of the Holy Ghost, which Comforter filleth with hope and perfect love, which love endureth by diligence unto prayer, until the end shall come, when all the saints shall dwell with God. (Moroni 8)

2 And again, more blessed are they who shall believe in your words because that ye shall testify that ye have seen me, and that ye know that I am. Yea, blessed are they who shall believe in your words, and come down into the depths of humility and be baptized, for they shall be visited with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and shall receive a remission of their sins. (3 Nep 12)

4 And after they had been received unto baptism, and were wrought upon and cleansed by the power of the Holy Ghost, they were numbered among the people of the church of Christ; and their names were taken, that they might be remembered and nourished by the good word of God, to keep them in the right way, to keep them continually watchful unto prayer, relying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith. (Moro 6)

17 Wherefore, do the things which I have told you I have seen that your Lord and your Redeemer should do; for, for this cause have they been shown unto me, that ye might know the gate by which ye should enter. For the gate by which ye should enter is repentance and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost. 18 And then are ye in this strait and narrow path which leads to eternal life; yea, ye have entered in by the gate; ye have done according to the commandments of the Father and the Son; and ye have received the Holy Ghost, which witnesses of the Father and the Son, unto the fulfilling of the promise which he hath made, that if ye entered in by the way ye should receive. (2Nep 31. Unless one has a correct understanding of the true nature of God, rather than believing incorrect precepts about God, the Holy Ghost cannot witness of the Father and the Son because the Holy Ghost would never lie to us! Again, this is a clear inference against the precepts of Mormonism which teaches a totally false doctrine of the Godhead.)

21 And now, behold, my beloved brethren, this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God. And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end. Amen. (2Nep 31)

1 And now, behold, my beloved brethren, I suppose that ye ponder somewhat in your hearts concerning that which ye should do after ye have entered in by the way. But, behold, why do ye ponder these things in your hearts? 2 Do ye not remember that I said unto you that after ye had received the Holy Ghost ye could speak with the tongue of angels? And now, how could ye speak with the tongue of angels save it were by the Holy Ghost? 3 Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ. Wherefore, I said unto you, feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do. (2Nep 32)

5 For behold, again I say unto you that if ye will enter in by the way, and receive the Holy Ghost, it will show unto you all things what ye should do. (2Nep 32)

1 And now I, Nephi, cannot write all the things which were taught among my people; neither am I mighty in writing, like unto speaking; for when a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it unto the hearts of the children of men. 2 But behold, there are many that harden their hearts against the Holy Spirit, that it hath no place in them; wherefore, they cast many things away which are written and esteem them as things of naught. (2Nep 33)

Based on the verses above we can summarize what the Holy Ghost will do for us: 1- We can speak with the tongue of angels and shout praises to the Holy One of Israel. 2- Fill us with hope and perfect love. 3- Grant a remission of our sins. 4- Cleans our souls. 5- Receive a witness of the Father and Son. 6- Show us all things we should do. 7- Our words will be carried into the hearts of others.

Earlier in this paper we noted that once a person receives the Holy Ghost, he or she continues to be influenced and led by the Holy Spirit. This is a mystery rarely mentioned by the prophets. By reading the papers on the mysteries you will learn that some mysteries are only recorded in the scriptures a few times. One is expected to notice them while diligently searching the word of God. The prophet Alma reveals this subtle and critical mystery in his great sermon on the Holy Order. We will only quote the two applicable verses from his sermon:

12 Now they, after being sanctified by the Holy Ghost, having their garments made white, being pure and spotless before God, could not look upon sin save it were with abhorrence; and there were many, exceedingly great many, who were made pure and entered into the rest of the Lord their God….. 28 But that ye would humble yourselves before the Lord, and call on his holy name, and watch and pray continually, that ye may not be tempted above that which ye can bear, and thus be led by the Holy Spirit, becoming humble, meek, submissive, patient, full of love and all long-suffering; (Alma 13. See Luke 4:1 which describes Jesus being filled with the Holy Ghost and being led by the Holy Spirit.)

Alma’s words inform us that even with the gift of the Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit continues to lead us higher along THE WAY. Thus we are sanctified by the Holy Ghost and led by the Holy Spirit. This clear reference should enable you to read the following verses with greater understanding of the relationship between the Holy Ghost and the Holy Spirit.

8 Behold, will ye reject these words? Will ye reject the words of the prophets; and will ye reject all the words which have been spoken concerning Christ, after so many have spoken concerning him; and deny the good word of Christ, and the power of God, and the gift of the Holy Ghost, and quench the Holy Spirit, and make a mock of the great plan of redemption, which hath been laid for you? (Jacob 6)

And now I, Nephi, cannot write all the things which were taught among my people; neither am I mighty in writing, like unto speaking; for when a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it unto the hearts of the children of men. But behold, there are many that harden their hearts against the Holy Spirit, that it hath no place in them; wherefore, they cast many things away which are written and esteem them as things of naught.” (2Nep 33:1-2)

23 But it is mockery before God, denying the mercies of Christ, and the power of his Holy Spirit, and putting trust in dead works. (Moro 8)

Alma’s words below clearly connote that the Holy Spirit is a revelator in our lives. Paul warns us below not to offend the Holy Spirit. Sup on these words of scripture to aid in your understanding of the true nature of the Holy Spirit as it leads one along THE WAY. Let us reiterate that after receiving the Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit continues to play a critical role in our lives carrying us to the tops of the mountains as we walk with God.

(Alma 5)

19 Quench not the Spirit. 20 Despise not prophesyings. 21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. (1Thess 5)

True Apostles who are Filled with the Holy Ghost and Led by the Holy Spirit

In The Gospel According to St. John, chapter 1, we learn that simple fishermen, the future apostles, were ready and waiting when Jesus appeared on the scene. They were able to report to a fellow fisherman they had found the Messiah which means these fishermen and future apostles had been searching and discussing these things among themselves. The conversations on their fishing boats and around the fires at night must have been provocative. Later as fully commissioned apostles these men labored in the power of the Holy Ghost and were led by the Holy Spirit. Take some time and search the New Testament regarding the Holy Ghost and the Holy Spirit and you’ll see ample evidence of these sacred things at work.

False apostles are detected and exposed during The Great and Marvelous Work

The Apostles, John and Paul, wrote at length regarding the end-time scenario known as The Great and Marvelous Work. They each prophesied regarding false apostles who would lead people astray. We know of only one sect or church of any significance on the earth today that claims to have apostles and claims to have the Holy Ghost. The fifteen men who sit at the head of the Mormon church as the board of directors claim to be prophets, seers, revelators, and apostles of Jesus Christ. Therefore, who else could John and Paul be referring to in their end-time prophecies? More than a thousand pages of evidence on our blog proves they are liars and false apostles. They do not possess the Holy Ghost nor are they led by the Holy Spirit and they do not have power to give the Holy Ghost to the members of their church. We bring these things to your attention to aid you in overcoming the false precepts which have controlled your lives through the indoctrination of Mormonism.

2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: (Rev 2)

13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. (2 Cor 11)

11 And he gave some, apostles; (Peter, James, John, and the others) and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; (Eph 4)

13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. 14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. (2 Tim 3)

We shall end this thought with the words of Jesus as a warning to all.

10 And if it so be that the church is built upon my gospel then will the Father show forth his own works in it. 11 But if it be not built upon my gospel, and is built upon the works of men (false apostles), or upon the works of the devil, verily I say unto you they have joy in their works for a season, and by and by the end cometh, and they are hewn down and cast into the fire, from whence there is no return. 12 For their works do follow them, for it is because of their works that they are hewn down; therefore remember the things that I have told you. (3 Ne 27)

Postscript

As persons seeking light and truth amid the darkness of life in this prison, we can be exceedingly grateful for the Holy Scriptures which teach us of sacred things our churches ignore or selectively delete from the corpus of their teachings. They want us to rely on them. God wants us to walk in His Spirit. The concepts we’ve addressed in this paper regarding the Holy Spirit and the Holy Ghost come as close to the human heart and human condition as any topic we could ever address for those walking in THE WAY. The churches teach their various precepts about these subjects and we inherit the traditions of our fathers which are not correct. One can easily see the cunning of the devil at work in the contrivances of church precepts, whereas God wants us to be cleansed and sanctified by the Holy Ghost and led by the Holy Spirit. That’s a marked contrast from the control imposed upon us by organized religion.

Once again, it’s apparent the king has no clothes. We were taught from childhood or conversion to the church as the case may be, that we all received the Holy Ghost as a matter of perfunctory church procedures as part of our initiation rites into the church. Then somehow as we began to mature in spiritual matters, we bought into the king’s finery as it was presented to us. “Why yes, I’ve experienced the baptism of fire” one commentator would say, and the rest of us were left to imagine to ourselves that we too must have somehow unknowingly experienced it as well— Plenty of Mormon authors have contributed to the myth, doing their part to whisper in our ears about the beauty of the king’s robes. No doubt the ostentatious pageantry of the temples with their courtly appearance contributed to the illusion of the king’s fine robes; especially when we too were given temple robes of our own to wear— robes which left us as exposed and naked as the king.

All of these distractions were simply diversions to keep us from seeing the truth in the scriptures regarding the Holy Spirit, the Holy Ghost, and many other truths. The descriptions of the prophets make it abundantly clear we never did receive the Holy Ghost. There was no baptism of fire and the pretending had to stop! The construct we had believed in fell apart and all the kings horsemen and all the kings men (the false apostles) could never make the king Joseph Smith look beautiful again. His nakedness was exposed for all to see and the fraud he perpetrated upon millions unraveled before our eyes. How did we come to discover these things? We were led by the Holy Spirit because we searched the scriptures diligently! Those same scriptures give us hope because they speak of a coming Great and Marvelous Work that will flood the earth with light. The Holy Ghost will once again be made available to those who walk in THE WAY and the true KING of Heaven will be in our midst. This is our report!
