The Book of Commandments vs. The Doctrine and Covenants – Part 2

Book of Commandments Doctrine and Covenants
4:4 Behold, verily I say, I have reserved the things of which I have spoken, which I have intrusted to my servant, for a wise purpose in me, and it shall be made known in future generations: But this generation shall have my words, yea and the testimony of three of my servants shall go forth with my words unto this generation; yea, three shall know of a surety that these things are true, for I will give them power, that they may behold and view these things as they are, and to none else will I grant this power, to receive this same testimony among this generation. And the testimony of three witnesses will I send forth and my word, and behold, whosoever believeth in my word, them will I visit with the manifestation of my Spirit, and they shall be born of me, and their testimony shall also go forth. 5:9 Behold, verily I say unto you, I have reserved those things which I have entrusted unto you, my servant Joseph, for a wise purpose in me, and it shall be made known unto future generations;5:10 But this generation shall have my word through you;

5:11 And in addition to your testimony, the testimony of three of my servants, whom I shall call and ordain, unto whom I will show these things, and they shall go forth with my words that are given through you.

5:12 Yea, they shall know of a surety that these things are true, for from heaven will I declare it unto them.

5:13 I will give them power that they may behold and view these things as they are;

5:14 And to none else will I grant this power, to receive this same testimony among this generation, in this the beginning of the rising up and the coming forth of my church out of the wilderness—clear as the moon, and fair as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners.

5:15 And the testimony of three witnesses will I send forth of my word.

5:16 And behold, whosoever believeth on my words, them will I visit with the manifestation of my Spirit; and they shall be born of me, even of water and of the Spirit—

5:17 And you must wait yet a little while, for ye are not yet ordained

5:18 And their testimony shall also go forth unto the condemnation of this generation if they harden their hearts against them;

In this post we will cover more changes to D&C 5 all of which give Joseph more authority and power than God intended and making this section conform to what was given in section 21 as we mentioned in the previous post.  At the conclusion of this post we will summarize the major additions/deletions to section 5 as covered in these first two posts.  The first change listed above is very subtle.  It is hard to detect if you aren’t reading carefully, but the impact of the change is HUGE and gives an entirely different meaning than what was in the original revelation.  In the BOC it stated: “But this generation shall have my words, yea and the testimony of three of my servants shall go forth with my words unto this generation.”  “My words” here is clearly referring to the Book of Mormon.  However, in the D&C there are two words added to the end of the first phrase: “THROUGH YOU.”  This gives the impression that this generation is going to continue to receive the Lord’s word through Joseph Smith.  Many Mormon leaders have used these words to prop up Joseph as a dispensation head, even greater than a prophet.  They have assumed that Joseph was the choice seer of 2 Nephi 3. However, as we learned Part 1, Joseph was to pretend to no other gift but the translation of the Book of Mormon.  This addition of making Joseph a self-appointed oracle fulfills in part these condemnatory words of the prophet Jeremiah:

Jer 23:

16 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord.

21 I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.

25 I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed.

26 How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart;

31 Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the Lord, that use their tongues, and say, He saith.

32 Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the Lord, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the Lord.

The next change is about being called and ordained in vs. 11 and 17.  We saw this also in D&C 5:6 in the first post.  There is no mention of the need for any ordination in the original.

The next significant change has these words added to D&C 5:14: “in this the beginning of the rising up and the coming forth of my church out of the wilderness—clear as the moon, and fair as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners.”  This gives the impression that the Lord is bringing forth his church out of the wilderness through Joseph Smith when he was given no such mandate from the Lord.  Again, he shall pretend to no other gift but the translation of the Book of Mormon.  The church that comes out of the wilderness as described in this addition seems to have an allusion to Revelation chapter 12 which is an endtime chapter that hasn’t even occurred yet.  This is the church of the Lamb (see 1 Nephi 14:10-14) that the Servant brings forth and is NOT the Mormon church. There NEVER should have been a Mormon church. God NEVER commanded a church to be organized.

Book of Commandments Doctrine and Covenants
4:5 And thus, if the people of this generation harden not their hearts, I will work a reformation among them, and I will put down all lyings, and deceivings, and priestcrafts, and envyings, and strifes, and idolatries, and sorceries, and all manner of iniquities, and I will establish my church, like unto the church which was taught by my disciples in the days of old.4:6 And now if this generation do harden their hearts against my word, behold I will deliver them up unto Satan, for he reigneth and hath power at this time, for he hath got great hold upon the hearts of the people of this generation: and not far from the iniquities of Sodom and Gomorrah, do they come at this time: and behold the sword of justice hangeth over their heads, and if they persist in the hardness of their hearts, the time cometh that it must fall upon them. Behold I tell you these things even as I also told the people of the destruction of Jerusalem, and my word shall be verified at this time as it hath hitherto been verified.. 5:19 For a desolating scourge shall go forth among the inhabitants of the earth, and shall continue to be poured out from time to time, if they repent not, until the earth is empty, and the inhabitants thereof are consumed away and utterly destroyed by the brightness of my coming.5:20 Behold, I tell you these things, even as I also told the people of the destruction of Jerusalem; and my word shall be verified at this time as it hath hitherto been verified.

Notice that we have a big deletion here as well as an addition.  Why the deletion?  First, there seems to be certain criteria the people must meet before the Lord establishes his church among them.  It is not a given.  They must not harden their hearts and they must put down all of their iniquities.  Is there any evidence the people did this under Joseph?  No.  The church under Joseph was an example of one failure after another: They didn’t live the law of consecration, didn’t establish Zion, treated the Book of Mormon lightly, the Kirtland Safety Society fiasco, etc.  If the Lord does establish his church it will be like unto his church that was taught by his disciples in the days of old, not the current corporate church engaged in priestcraft that fits the description of these verses perfectly:

1 Ne. 22:

22 And the righteous need not fear, for they are those who shall not be confounded. But it is the kingdom of the devil, which shall be built up among the children of men, which kingdom is established among them which are in the flesh—

23 For the time speedily shall come that all churches which are built up to get gain, and all those who are built up to get power over the flesh, and those who are built up to become popular in the eyes of the world, and those who seek the lusts of the flesh and the things of the world, and to do all manner of iniquity; yea, in fine, all those who belong to the kingdom of the devil are they who need fear, and tremble, and quake; they are those who must be brought low in the dust; they are those who must be consumed as stubble; and this is according to the words of the prophet.

They were warned that if they did harden their hearts they would be delivered up unto Satan.  The members of the church were driven out of every home they had in violent fashion, until they were finally driven out of Nauvoo into the desert having embraced polygamy.  This sounds like being delivered up unto Satan to me.  Here are some more prophetic verses from the Book of Mormon in this regard:

2 Ne. 28:

18 But behold, that great and abominable church, the whore of all the earth, must tumble to the earth, and great must be the fall thereof.

19 For the kingdom of the devil must shake, and they which belong to it must needs be stirred up unto repentance, or the devil will grasp them with his everlasting chains, and they be stirred up to anger, and perish;

20 For behold, at that day shall he rage in the hearts of the children of men, and stir them up to anger against that which is good.

21 And others will he pacify, and lull them away into carnal security, that they will say: All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is well—and thus the devil cheateth their souls, and leadeth them away carefully down to hell.

22 And behold, others he flattereth away, and telleth them there is no hell; and he saith unto them: I am no devil, for there is none—and thus he whispereth in their ears, until he grasps them with his awful chains, from whence there is no deliverance.

23 Yea, they are grasped with death, and hell; and death, and hell, and the devil, and all that have been seized therewith must stand before the throne of God, and be judged according to their works, from whence they must go into the place prepared for them, even a lake of fire and brimstone, which is endless torment.

24 Therefore, wo be unto him that is at ease in Zion!

25 Wo be unto him that crieth: All is well!

26 Yea, wo be unto him that hearkeneth unto the precepts of men, and denieth the power of God, and the gift of the Holy Ghost!

The Lord affirms that Satan does have great hold over their hearts. If they persist in their wickedness the sword of justice will hang over their heads, and it will fall.  The words of Moroni fit very appropriately here:

Mormon 8:

35 Behold, I speak unto you as if ye were present, and yet ye are not. But behold, Jesus Christ hath shown you unto me, and I know your doing.

36 And I know that ye do walk in the pride of your hearts; and there are none save a few only who do not lift themselves up in the pride of their hearts, unto the wearing of very fine apparel, unto envying, and strifes, and malice, and persecutions, and all manner of iniquities; and your churches, yea, even every one, have become polluted because of the pride of your hearts.

37 For behold, ye do love money, and your substance, and your fine apparel, and the adorning of your churches, more than ye love the poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted.

38 O ye pollutions, ye hypocrites, ye teachers, who sell yourselves for that which will canker, why have ye polluted the holy church of God? Why are ye ashamed to take upon you the name of Christ? Why do ye not think that greater is the value of an endless happiness than that misery which never dies—because of the praise of the world?

39 Why do ye adorn yourselves with that which hath no life, and yet suffer the hungry, and the needy, and the naked, and the sick and the afflicted to pass by you, and notice them not?

40 Yea, why do ye build up your secret abominations to get gain, and cause that widows should mourn before the Lord, and also orphans to mourn before the Lord, and also the blood of their fathers and their husbands to cry unto the Lord from the ground, for vengeance upon your heads?

41 Behold, the sword of vengeance hangeth over you; and the time soon cometh that he avengeth the blood of the saints upon you, for he will not suffer their cries any longer.

No wonder Joseph and Sidney wanted these words removed from the D&C.

A summary of the major changes to our current section 5:

  1. The safeguard given by God that Joseph was to pretend to no other gift but the translation of the Book of Mormon was changed to say he can have further gifts once the Book of Mormon project is completed.
  2. The addition that Smith will hereafter be ordained.
  3. The addition that God will continue to reveal his word through Smith to this generation making him an ongoing mouthpiece for God.
  4. The statement is added that God’s church is beginning to come forth through his efforts.
  5. The statement is deleted that says God’s church will only be established if they harden not their hearts.  Also, that they would be delivered up unto Satan.

All of these changes taken together are a massive recipe for fraud, abuse and deception.  Paul called this very thing the Strong Delusion (see 2 Thes 2:11-12).  Our hope is if we will properly and prayerfully analyze this we can awake and arise out of the chains and captivity of this false system and receive the liberty and eternal life the Messiah will bring (see 2 Ne 2:27-29).
