The Holy One of Israel in The Book of Mormon

AndersHoly One of Israel, Nature of God, One God

We come now to the Book of Mormon prophets Nephi and Jacob who wrote extensively about this Holy One of Israel in their prophetic writings. They share much in common with the writings of Isaiah, because they are students of the great prophet of the GMW, and they shed tremendous light on the Isaiah Story. They also shared something else profound with Isaiah:

2 And now I, Nephi, write more of the words of Isaiah, for my soul delighteth in his words. For I will liken his words unto my people, and I will send them forth unto all my children, for he verily saw my Redeemer, even as I have seen him.

3 And my brother, Jacob, also has seen him as I have seen him; wherefore, I will send their words forth unto my children to prove unto them that my words are true. Wherefore, by the words of three, God hath said, I will establish my word. Nevertheless, God sendeth more witnesses, and he proveth all his words. (2Nep 11:2-3)

With their provenance established, and their unassailable status as true special witnesses of The Holy One of Israel defined, let’s continue to explore what the scriptures can teach us about The Holy One of Israel.

14 And because they turn their hearts aside, saith the prophet, and have despised the Holy One of Israel, they shall wander in the flesh, and perish, and become a hiss and a byword, and be hated among all nations. 15 Nevertheless, when that day cometh, saith the prophet, that they no more turn aside their hearts against the Holy One of Israel, then will he remember the covenants which he made to their fathers. (1Nep 19:14-15)

In the verse above, Nephi is prefacing the chapters on Isaiah that he is about to quote for the first time in his record. He is speaking of the time when the Holy One of Israel will stand up among us, and the people will despise him and reject him and they will suffer because of it. We think to ourselves that if we had lived in the days of Jesus that we wouldn’t have rejected him, but Isaiah tells us that when this event is repeated at the end of days that these same people will reject their God again. Nephi adds his testimony to Isaiah. There is nothing new under the sun.

Nephi then quotes Isaiah chapters 48 and 49 which are incredible summary chapters of the GMW. After Nephi copies these two Isaiah chapters, he continues his commentary of Isaiah in 1 Nephi chapter 22. We will note the verses where he speaks of the Holy One of Israel. Keep in mind that Nephi is speaking of the coming GMW.

5 And since they have been led away, these things have been prophesied concerning them, and also concerning all those who shall hereafter be scattered and be confounded, because of the Holy One of Israel; for against him will they harden their hearts; wherefore, they shall be scattered among all nations and shall be hated of all men. (1Nep 22:5)

Because the people of the world do not understand the Isaiah Story, they selectively attempt to apply certain verses to Jesus’ ministry. We cannot wrest the scriptures. The prophecy of Isaiah must be looked at as a whole, recognizing that Isaiah was the prophetic writer of the last days. Nephi’s prophecy is also about the GMW.

17 Wherefore, he will preserve the righteous by his power, even if it so be that the fulness of his wrath must come, and the righteous be preserved, even unto the destruction of their enemies by fire. Wherefore, the righteous need not fear; for thus saith the prophet, they shall be saved, even if it so be as by fire.

18 Behold, my brethren, I say unto you, that these things must shortly come; yea, even blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke must come; and it must needs be upon the face of this earth; and it cometh unto men according to the flesh if it so be that they will harden their hearts against the Holy One of Israel.

19 For behold, the righteous shall not perish; for the time surely must come that all they who fight against Zion shall be cut off.

20 And the Lord will surely prepare a way for his people, unto the fulfilling of the words of Moses, which he spake, saying: A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass that all those who will not hear that prophet shall be cut off from among the people.

21 And now I, Nephi, declare unto you, that this prophet of whom Moses spake was the Holy One of Israel; wherefore, he shall execute judgment in righteousness.

22 And the righteous need not fear, for they are those who shall not be confounded. But it is the kingdom of the devil, which shall be built up among the children of men, which kingdom is established among them which are in the flesh—

23 For the time speedily shall come that all churches which are built up to get gain, and all those who are built up to get power over the flesh, and those who are built up to become popular in the eyes of the world, and those who seek the lusts of the flesh and the things of the world, and to do all manner of iniquity; yea, in fine, all those who belong to the kingdom of the devil are they who need fear, and tremble, and quake; they are those who must be brought low in the dust; they are those who must be consumed as stubble; and this is according to the words of the prophet.

24 And the time cometh speedily that the righteous must be led up as calves of the stall, and the Holy One of Israel must reign in dominion, and might, and power, and great glory.

25 And he gathereth his children from the four quarters of the earth; and he numbereth his sheep, and they know him; and there shall be one fold and one shepherd; and he shall feed his sheep, and in him they shall find pasture.

26 And because of the righteousness of his people, Satan has no power; wherefore, he cannot be loosed for the space of many years; for he hath no power over the hearts of the people, for they dwell in righteousness, and the Holy One of Israel reigneth.

27 And now behold, I, Nephi, say unto you that all these things must come according to the flesh.

28 But, behold, all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people shall dwell safely in the Holy One of Israel if it so be that they will repent. (1Nep 22: 17-28)

The churches wrest these scriptures we’ve just read which speak of the Holy One of Israel and try to apply them strictly to Jesus, even though the context of the prophecies clearly demonstrate an end of days chronology. We have gone to great lengths before to show how these magnificent scriptures portray a singular and consistent story written by every prophetic writer regarding the GMW. Nephi knew exactly what he wrote, and his warnings to the churches in the last days. So did his brother Jacob, so let’s continue to review their words on these matters. Let the spirit of the writings of these holy prophets stand on their own and enter into your hearts, filling you with light and truth; bringing you to a deeper knowledge of the intent and meaning of the scriptures. Now we will turn to Jacob’s words about the Holy One of Israel:

9 Nevertheless, the Lord has shown unto me that they should return again. And he also has shown unto me that the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, should manifest himself unto them in the flesh; and after he should manifest himself they should scourge him and crucify him, according to the words of the angel who spake it unto me. (2Nep 6:9)

10 And after they have hardened their hearts and stiffened their necks against the Holy One of Israel, behold, the judgments of the Holy One of Israel shall come upon them. And the day cometh that they shall be smitten and afflicted. (2Nep 6:10)

11 And because of the way of deliverance of our God, the Holy One of Israel, this death, of which I have spoken, which is the temporal, shall deliver up its dead; which death is the grave. (2Nep 9:11)

12 And this death of which I have spoken, which is the spiritual death, shall deliver up its dead; which spiritual death is hell; wherefore, death and hell must deliver up their dead, and hell must deliver up its captive spirits, and the grave must deliver up its captive bodies, and the bodies and the spirits of men will be restored one to the other; and it is by the power of the resurrection of the Holy One of Israel. (2Nep 9:12)

15 And it shall come to pass that when all men shall have passed from this first death unto life, insomuch as they have become immortal, they must appear before the judgment-seat of the Holy One of Israel; and then cometh the judgment, and then must they be judged according to the holy judgment of God. (2Nep 9:15)

18 But, behold, the righteous, the saints of the Holy One of Israel, they who have believed in the Holy One of Israel, they who have endured the crosses of the world, and despised the shame of it, they shall inherit the kingdom of God, which was prepared for them from the foundation of the world, and their joy shall be full forever. (2Nep 9:18)

19 O the greatness of the mercy of our God, the Holy One of Israel! For he delivereth his saints from that awful monster the devil, and death, and hell, and that lake of fire and brimstone, which is endless torment. (2Nep 9:19)

23 And he commandeth all men that they must repent, and be baptized in his name, having perfect faith in the Holy One of Israel, or they cannot be saved in the kingdom of God. (2Nep 9:23)

24 And if they will not repent and believe in his name, and be baptized in his name, and endure to the end, they must be damned; for the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has spoken it. (2Nep 9:24)

25 Wherefore, he has given a law; and where there is no law given there is no punishment; and where there is no punishment there is no condemnation; and where there is no condemnation the mercies of the Holy One of Israel have claim upon them, because of the atonement; for they are delivered by the power of him. (2Nep 9:25)

26 For the atonement satisfieth the demands of his justice upon all those who have not the law given to them, that they are delivered from that awful monster, death and hell, and the devil, and the lake of fire and brimstone, which is endless torment; and they are restored to that God who gave them breath, which is the Holy One of Israel. (2Nep 9:26)

40 O, my beloved brethren, give ear to my words. Remember the greatness of the Holy One of Israel. Do not say that I have spoken hard things against you; for if ye do, ye will revile against the truth; for I have spoken the words of your Maker. I know that the words of truth are hard against all uncleanness; but the righteous fear them not, for they love the truth and are not shaken. (2Nep 9:40)

41 O then, my beloved brethren, come unto the Lord, the Holy One. Remember that his paths are righteous. Behold, the way for man is narrow, but it lieth in a straight course before him, and the keeper of the gate is the Holy One of Israel; and he employeth no servant there; and there is none other way save it be by the gate; for he cannot be deceived, for the Lord God is his name. (2Nep 9:41)

51 Wherefore, do not spend money for that which is of no worth, nor your labor for that which cannot satisfy. Hearken diligently unto me, and remember the words which I have spoken; and come unto the Holy One of Israel, and feast upon that which perisheth not, neither can be corrupted, and let your soul delight in fatness. (2Nep 9:51)

Perhaps never before when you’ve read Jacob’s tremendous treatise on eternal lives and the GMW in 2Nephi chapters 6-10 have you appreciated just how many times he speaks of the Holy One of Israel. Jacob KNEW and loved God because he had been in his presence and had seen for himself the deep mysteries spoken of here.  We will conclude this paper by presenting to you the remaining verses of scripture written by Nephi which contain this most sacred name of our God. A name which connotes his Oneness, as well as His nature and his works coming down into the vineyard as a Son to do His own work!

29 And now behold, I say unto you that the right way is to believe in Christ, and deny him not; and Christ is the Holy One of Israel; wherefore ye must bow down before him, and worship him with all your might, mind, and strength, and your whole soul; and if ye do this ye shall in nowise be cast out. (2Nep 25:29)

30 And the meek also shall increase, and their joy shall be in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. (2Nep 27:30)

2 For behold, I say unto you that as many of the Gentiles as will repent are the covenant people of the Lord; and as many of the Jews as will not repent shall be cast off; for the Lord covenanteth with none save it be with them that repent and believe in his Son, who is the Holy One of Israel. (2Nep 30:2)

13 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, I know that if ye shall follow the Son, with full purpose of heart, acting no hypocrisy and no deception before God, but with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the Father that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ, by baptism—yea, by following your Lord and your Savior down into the water, according to his word, behold, then shall ye receive the Holy Ghost; yea, then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost; and then can ye speak with the tongue of angels, and shout praises unto the Holy One of Israel. (2Nep 31:13)

In posts that will follow we will speak of this One God including His coming down into the world as a Son in our midst, and you’ll more fully appreciate Nephi’s words quoted here. Our humility and depth of gratitude to this One God knows no bounds. We are so thankful for the scriptures and these prophets who gave us these magnificent things, exposing the mysteries of the scriptures.
