Now we begin our discussion regarding one of the most misunderstood concepts in all of religious dogma and doctrine. As always we will take the scriptures as our guide to see what the holy prophets and apostles have said on these matters. And that’s the best place to begin because the writers of scripture all agree on this point regardless of the discrepancies of men and their opinions. We will start with one of the most wrested passages of scripture in the Mormon canon. We invite you to set aside all of your previous notions about who and what God is (the so-called doctrine of the Godhead) and just read these words for what they say to you:
1 And now Abinadi said unto them: I would that ye should understand that God himself shall come down among the children of men, and shall redeem his people.
2 And because he dwelleth in flesh he shall be called the Son of God, and having subjected the flesh to the will of the Father, being the Father and the Son–
3 The Father, because he was conceived by the power of God; and the Son, because of the flesh; thus becoming the Father and Son–
4 And they are one God, yea, the very Eternal Father of heaven and of earth.
5 And thus the flesh becoming subject to the Spirit, or the Son to the Father, being one God (Msh 15:1-5)
Does this really need any further explanation? The words of Abinadi are so simple and so clear that any child could read them and tell you exactly what they mean. But our problem stems from generations of Mormons being terrified of reading the scriptures for what they say, because the pundits at pulpits have propagated a doctrine of the Father and Son which is wholly unsubstantiated by the Book of Mormon and the Bible.
And lets pause right here at the outset and honestly state that our misreading of the scriptures relative to the One God is caused by stumbling blocks from within the Mormon culture itself. On this blog we’ve addressed these problems at length including the revisionist history in the canon of writings called the “Doctrine and Covenants” which disagree with the Book of Mormon and Bible on every important matter of doctrine, and a culture of deferring to the dictates of a group of men who set themselves above the word of God, and yet display no evidence whatsoever for the gifts of revelation and prophecy or of seership. Until each individual is able to honestly face these and the many other problems of understanding God’s word through the lens of Mormonism, you’ll never appreciate the simple majesty of the One God as given to us in scripture. Those are the facts.
So what did Abinadi tell us? Let’s look at this with the eyes of a child. It’s so very simple to understand.
1 And now Abinadi said unto them: I would that ye should understand that God himself shall come down among the children of men, and shall redeem his people. (God himself is coming down to earth.)
2 And because he dwelleth in flesh he shall be called the Son of God, and having subjected the flesh to the will of the Father, being the Father and the Son– (When God is born in the flesh as a baby and lives on earth as a man, He is called the Son of God. And He is both the Father and the Son. In order to be both the Father and the Son, part of the Father’s Spirit must be born into the body of a child so God can come down to earth as the Son. That’s pretty simple to understand from these words. Can we become as little children and understand this?)
3 The Father, because he was conceived by the power of God; and the Son, because of the flesh; thus becoming the Father and Son– (He is the Father because he is self-existent as God, and He is the Son because a part of God’s Spirit was born on earth. That’s much simpler to understand than anything you’ve ever heard before about the Godhead. And we’re not making this stuff up. Open your scriptures and read it for yourself. Remember not to put our human limits on God. Another prophet we quoted in a prior post frowned on that habit. See Psm 78:41.)
4 And they are one God, yea, the very Eternal Father of heaven and of earth. (They are ONE GOD……. The Eternal Father. It can’t be made more clear!)
5 And thus the flesh becoming subject to the Spirit, or the Son to the Father, being one God (This is brilliantly simple. The Son’s flesh is subject to the Father’s Spirit and they are ONE GOD. We hope you read the post about God’s body being comprised of Spirit. All the scriptures agree on this point except for that abortion called the D&C.) (Msh 15:1-5)
We shall go forward now allowing the scriptures to speak for themselves, considering that we have provided sufficient insight for you to read the following verses with “new eyes” and hear the words of the prophets with “new ears.” Enjoy these precious things because they are the true doctrine of the nature of God.
21 Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the Lord? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. (Isa 45:21)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)
42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. (John 8:42)
3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; (John 13:3)
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. 8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? 10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake. (John 14:6-11)
24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. (John 15:24)
27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. 28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. 29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. 30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. (John 16:27-30)
5 Yea, I know that ye know that in the body he shall show himself unto those at Jerusalem, from whence we came; for it is expedient that it should be among them; for it behooveth the great Creator that he suffereth himself to become subject unto man in the flesh, and die for all men, that all men might become subject unto him. (2Nep 9:5)
12 But, behold, they shall have wars, and rumors of wars; and when the day cometh that the Only Begotten of the Father, yea, even the Father of heaven and of earth, shall manifest himself unto them in the flesh, behold, they will reject him, because of their iniquities, and the hardness of their hearts, and the stiffness of their necks. (2Nep 25:12)
12 And as I spake concerning the convincing of the Jews, that Jesus is the very Christ, it must needs be that the Gentiles be convinced also that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God; (2Nep 26:12)
5 For behold, the time cometh, and is not far distant, that with power, the Lord Omnipotent who reigneth, who was, and is from all eternity to all eternity, shall come down from heaven among the children of men, and shall dwell in a tabernacle of clay, and shall go forth amongst men, working mighty miracles, such as healing the sick, raising the dead, causing the lame to walk, the blind to receive their sight, and the deaf to hear, and curing all manner of diseases. (Msh 3:5)
27 And because he said unto them that Christ was the God, the Father of all things, and said that he should take upon him the image of man, and it should be the image after which man was created in the beginning; or in other words, he said that man was created after the image of God, and that God should come down among the children of men, and take upon him flesh and blood, and go forth upon the face of the earth- (Msh 7:27)
34 Have they not said that God himself should come down among the children of men, and take upon him the form of man, and go forth in mighty power upon the face of the earth? (Msh 13:34)
15 Teach them that redemption cometh through Christ the Lord, who is the very Eternal Father. Amen. (Msh 16:15)
8 For thou hast said that God himself should come down among the children of men; and now, for this cause thou shalt be put to death unless thou wilt recall all the words which thou hast spoken evil concerning me and my people. (Msh 17:8)
38 Now Zeezrom saith again unto him: Is the Son of God the very Eternal Father? 39 And Amulek said unto him: Yea, he is the very Eternal Father of heaven and of earth, and all things which in them are; he is the beginning and the end, the first and the last; (Alma 11:38-39)
44 Now, this restoration shall come to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, both the wicked and the righteous; and even there shall not so much as a hair of their heads be lost; but every thing shall be restored to its perfect frame, as it is now, or in the body, and shall be brought and be arraigned before the bar of Christ the Son, and God the Father, and the Holy Spirit, which is one Eternal God, to be judged according to their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil. (Alma 11:44) (So here we can add one other tremendous piece of this most simple puzzle. The Holy Spirit is also part of God.)
15 And now, the plan of mercy could not be brought about except an atonement should be made; therefore God himself atoneth for the sins of the world, to bring about the plan of mercy, to appease the demands of justice, that God might be a perfect, just God, and a merciful God also. (Alma 42:15)
14 Behold, I come unto my own, to fulfil all things which I have made known unto the children of men from the foundation of the world, and to do the will, both of the Father and of the Son-of the Father because of me, and of the Son because of my flesh. And behold, the time is at hand, and this night shall the sign be given. (3Nep 1:14)
15 Behold, I am Jesus Christ the Son of God. I created the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are. I was with the Father from the beginning. I am in the Father, and the Father in me; and in me hath the Father glorified his name. (3Nep 9:15)
27 And after this manner shall ye baptize in my name; for behold, verily I say unto you, that the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost are one; and I am in the Father, and the Father in me, and the Father and I are one. (3Nep 11:27)
35 The Father hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of the Father; and the Father and I are one. (3Nep 20:35)
12 Behold, he created Adam, and by Adam came the fall of man. And because of the fall of man came Jesus Christ, even the Father and the Son; and because of Jesus Christ came the redemption of man. (Morm 9:12)
8 And he had sworn in his wrath unto the brother of Jared, that whoso should possess this land of promise, from that time henceforth and forever, should serve him, the true and only God, or they should be swept off when the fulness of his wrath should come upon them. (Eth 2:8)
14 Behold, I am he who was prepared from the foundation of the world to redeem my people. Behold, I am Jesus Christ. I am the Father and the Son. In me shall all mankind have life, and that eternally, even they who shall believe on my name; and they shall become my sons and my daughters. (Eth 3:14)
7 And in that day that they shall exercise faith in me, saith the Lord, even as the brother of Jared did, that they may become sanctified in me, then will I manifest unto them the things which the brother of Jared saw, even to the unfolding unto them all my revelations, saith Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Father of the heavens and of the earth, and all things that in them are. (Eth 4:7)
12 And whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do good is of me; for good cometh of none save it be of me. I am the same that leadeth men to all good; he that will not believe my words will not believe me-that I am; and he that will not believe me will not believe the Father who sent me. For behold, I am the Father, I am the light, and the life, and the truth of the world. (Eth 4:12)
20 And behold, we have seen in this record that one of these was the brother of Jared; for so great was his faith in God, that when God put forth his finger he could not hide it from the sight of the brother of Jared, because of his word which he had spoken unto him, which word he had obtained by faith. (Eth 12:20)
So what have we learned from all of these verses which speak so clearly about the One God? We know that the Immortal God is the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. And we learn that Jesus Christ is an aspect of God the Father who came down to the earth in flesh. In the forthcoming posts on Jacob chapter 5 we will learn that God has come down into His vineyard to work many times; not just as Jesus. And the Isaiah Story tells us that God will come down to the earth again as a man just as Jesus came as a man to finish the work in His vineyard. Now you understand ONE of the great mysteries of the scriptures!
The problem with Mormon pundits is that in order to maintain good fellowship within their system of belief and avoid severe church punishment, they must filter the scriptures through the convoluted and corrupted words of their church leaders which have wrested the scriptures until they are unrecognizable. As long as Mormon writers and commentators continue to do this for the sake of gain and reputation among their people, you will NEVER get to the truths within the scriptures by reading the precepts of men on the shelves of Deseret Book. Read the scriptures now with the keys we’re giving you on this blog and free yourselves from the chains with which you are bound. Open eyes and open ears will serve you well my friends.
